The devastation of Hurricane Sandy is likely to create big distortions — though not lasting effects — in a wide range of U.S. economic measures.

Hurrican Sandy is a massive late-season tropical storm that was upgraded to a Category 1 Hurricane.

The hurricane, which started off as a tropical storm, has already affected Jamaica, Cuba, The Bahamas, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and is now preparing to make landfall on the East Coast of the United States and Eastern Canada on Monday night.

Windspeeds

The US media is referring to the hurricane as "Frankenstorm". So far, the highest recorded windspeed during the hurricane has been 110mph or 175kmph.

Who's in danger?

Millions of people live in areas that could see flooding. From South Carolina all the way up to Maine, people are being warned to prepare- and, in some cases, evacuate.

People have also been asked to shutter or board windows and doors. Most essential services like subways, buses, trains etc will be shut till the storm passes.

On Sunday, New York had gone into emergency mode with subway, bus and regional rail systems being shut down. And school was called off.

When's it going to hit?

Sandy's centre is expected to be near the coast on Monday night, the National Hurricane Center said. It may strengthen a bit before weakening as it moves over land
